AHA
On the label as: glycolic, lactic or mandelic acid
Exfoliates the surface for smoother, brighter skin.
Alpha hydroxy acids loosen the dead cells on the surface so they shed faster, leaving skin smoother and brighter. Glycolic acid is the strongest; lactic and mandelic acids are gentler.
Who it suits
Rough texture, tan, dullness and dry, flaky skin.
How to use it
- Night, two or three times a week to start.
- Not on the same night as retinol, or on broken skin.
- Sunscreen the next morning without fail.
What to pair it with
AHA + Sunscreen
Work well together
Acids leave fresh skin more sun-sensitive. Sunscreen the next morning is a must.
AHA + Vitamin C
Use one in the morning, one at night
Both are acidic and can sting together. Vitamin C in the morning, the acid at night.
AHA + Peptides
Use one in the morning, one at night
Acids can break down peptides. Peptides in the morning, the acid at night.
AHA + Retinol
Use on different nights
Both exfoliate. Together they can sting and peel. Use them on different nights.
AHA + BHA
Use on different nights
Two exfoliants at once is too much for most skin. Pick one per night, or a product that already blends both.
AHA + Benzoyl peroxide
Use on different nights
Both dry and irritate. Use them on different days.
AHA + Azelaic acid
Use on different nights
Fine for tough skin; on sensitive skin use them on different nights.
Everything else pairs fine with aha: apply the thinnest product first.
